US expects “clean and fair” Brazilian elections, says US Defense Secretary

In a bilateral meeting this Wednesday morning with the Brazilian Defense Minister, Paulo Sérgio Nogueira, the United States Secretary of DefenseLloyd Austin, said he hoped that the elections this year this year are “free and transparent” and that they remain “clean and fair”, as they always were. Austin reiterated his country’s confidence in the Brazilian electoral system.

The meeting came a day after the US envoy preached “devotion to democracy” and that the military remain under “firm civilian control”, during a meeting of defense ministers of the Americas, which has been taking place since Tuesday in Brasilia. According to interlocutors who heard the conversation, Paulo Sérgio Nogueira said that Brazil will have “transparent, safe and auditable elections.”

Also according to these sources, the Defense Minister reinforced that he values ​​democratic values. He defended the participation of the Armed Forces in the inspection of the polls and stressed that the military were invited by the Superior Electoral Court (TSE) to participate in the electoral process.

The meeting lasted almost an hour and the Brazilian elections took only a part of the discussions. One of the participants emphasized that the bilateral agenda in the area of ​​defense is quite intense and covers a series of other issues, such as cooperation agreements.
