The Impostometer, a panel installed in the headquarters building of the ACSP (Commercial Association of São Paulo), in the historic center of the capital of São Paulo, showed this Wednesday (16) that Brazilians have already paid R$ 2.5 trillion in taxes this year. The mark was reached 40 days in advance compared to 2021, when the same amount was reached on December 20th.
The amount represents the sum paid by Brazilian taxpayers to the federal, state and municipal governments and includes taxes, fees and contributions, including fines.
Marcel Solimeo, an economist at ACSP, states that the anticipation of the amount is related to the effects of inflation, since indirect taxes, such as ICMS, are levied on the final price. The result is also explained by factors such as the recovery of economic activity and the good results of large companies.
“The greatest growth in tax collection occurred in the sphere of the federal government, which accounts for around 66% of total taxation, although it redistributes a portion of that revenue to states and municipalities. We need to be careful that the new government, under the pretext of simplification or correcting distortions, ends up increasing the tax burden,” he says.
According to him, the data show growth of around 11% in total collection and that collection would be greater if it had not occurred, in recent months, for the reduction of tax rates on energy, telecommunications and fuel, which have a relevant weight in the revenue of States.
