Perceive why the Gol, the best-selling automobile for 20 years in Brazil, might be discontinued

Volkswagen explains that the model is not compatible with the new Brazilian rules regarding the emission of pollutants and safety

Best-selling model in Brazil for 20 years, the Goal will no longer be manufactured. THE volkswagen announced that it will also discontinue production of the Voyage, another popular model in the Brazilian car market. According to the automaker, the vehicles are incompatible with the country’s new emissions and safety regulations.

The most produced, best-selling and most exported vehicle in the history of the national market — 8 million in 42 years — the Gol will have a limited farewell edition, with just one thousand units. The Gol Last Edition version was developed by the Volkswagen do Brasil Design team and headed by Volkswagen’s Head of Design in South America, José Carlos Pavone.

Voyage production, which was interrupted for a few years, adds up to over 1.5 million units.

The parts replacement service will remain as normal, as there is an agreement that determines that automakers must offer replacement parts for a period of ten years for vehicles that are discontinued.

Pollution

The models do not comply with the rules of the Air Pollution Control Program for Motor Vehicles (Proconve), which establishes limits on polluting gas emissions in order to guarantee air quality in large Brazilian cities. The rules will go into effect for all new sales and registrations on January 1, 2023.

Safety

Neither the Gol nor the Voyage meet the requirements established in the new Brazilian safety regulation, which states that all zero-kilometer vehicles will be required to include equipment that is currently optional, such as protection against frontal impacts from 2024.

lurch

After ending production in the country, the automaker wants to export research and technology services from Brazil

Alternative

To replace the two popular models of the brand, Volks is betting on the new Polo Track that has four air bags, two in the front and two on the sides in the front seats; assistant for starting on slopes and ascents; electronic stability control (ESC); child seat attachment system; seat belt buckle alert for all positions; electronic differential lock, among others.

Investment

The launch of the Polo Track is part of the automaker’s R$7 billion investment strategy by 2026 in Latin America. The new model will be sold in its pre-launch for the same price as the Gol 1.0 MPI, R$ 79,990, including additional features such as a bluetooth sound system, multifunctional steering wheel, on-board computer, USB ports and roof antenna.
