Of the businesses energetic in Brazil, 69% are MEIs

Of the total number of active companies in Brazil (19,373,257), 69% are Individual Microentrepreneurs (MEIs), a volume of 13,489,017. “The fact of having large numbers of MEIs is a result of the success of the public policy of formalization for those who had informal activity. There are no difficulties in opening companies in Brazil”, said the director of the National Department of Business Registration and Integration of the Special Secretariat for Productivity and Competitiveness of the Ministry of Economy, André Luiz Santa Cruz during a press conference.

According to him, MEIs are important activities that generate formal jobs, including, and are often the embryo of an enterprise that will prosper. “In addition, MEI’s success is a demonstration of the results of business environment policies. The more the business environment improves, the more people feel encouraged to undertake. This is the portrait of our time. Brazil is no longer a hostile country to those who want to undertake,” he said.

Of the more than 13,000 MEI units in operation in Brazil, 1,114,826 were opened in the first four months of this year, an increase of 14.0% compared to the last four months of 2021, but a decrease of 3.2% compared to same period last year. These data are part of the Business Map Bulletin for the first four months of 2022, recently released by the Ministry of Economy.

Limited Business Societies total 4,667,178 units, of which 226,549 started their activities between January and last April, an increase of 3.2% compared to the last four months of 2021 and 19.1% over the first. Individual Limited Liability Companies (Eireli) totaled 937,163, an increase of 2,381 firms in the first four months of the year (a 55.5% decrease compared to the third four months of 2021 and a 92-4% decrease compared to the same period last year ).

The volume of public limited companies in the country is 177,898, of which 3,749 started to operate in the same period of the bulletin – a decrease of 20.6% compared to the previous period and 23.8% compared to the same months of 2021. In the case of cooperatives, 880 units were opened from January to April, for a total of 35,169. This represented a decrease of 3.8% in the comparison from September to December 2021, but an increase of 23.2% compared to the same period last year.

Finally, the group “other types of companies” registered 66,832 establishments in the first four months of the year, when 1,742 went into operation – a drop of 40% and 32.5%, respectively.
