Political analysts take it for granted that the Italy to bring forward the elections to overcome the current political imbroglio, after the Prime Minister Mario Draghi presented his resignation during the mutiny of a coalition party.

Italy’s President Sergio Mattarella rejected Draghi’s resignation yesterday and asked Draghi to address Parliament next week to get a clearer picture of the political situation.

Draghi’s rule, which was short, lasted 18 months and collapsed after the 5-Star Movement boycotted a parliamentary confidence vote on Draghi’s plans to tackle Italy’s rising cost of living, arguing that public policy was insufficient.

Added to that, the party found itself split by a split last month.

A national election in Italy is scheduled for the first half of 2023 and the anticipation of the election would give parties little time to draft manifestos and prepare their candidate lists.

With the early elections, Draghi could remain in the role as an interim, but he would not be able to draw up a 2023 budget or enact reforms demanded by Europe in exchange for the recovery funds.
