‘I am glad my mom died’: Nickelodeon actress releases biography on abuse expertise
The book “I’m Glad My Mom Died” details Jennette McCurdy’s moments on the set of iCarly and her abusive relationship with her mother, Debra.
the american actress Jennette McCurdy has just published the memoir “I’m Glad My Mother Died” (“I’m Glad My Mom Died“, in English).
The controversially titled biography details McCurdy’s experiences as a child actress on the set of “Icarly”, one of the biggest programs Nickelodeonand his abusive relationship with his mother, Debra McCurdy, who passed away in 2013.
The author is aware that the book, whose cover features an image of McCurdy holding a pink urn with a smile on his face, may irritate many readers. But she defends that the book sums up her life well, which, according to an interview with New York Timesvaries between “angry” and “sarcastic”.
Abusive relationship with mother
Jennette McCurdy was 13 when she got the role of Sam Puckett in Icarly, Nickelodeon’s hit series. McCurdy was best friends with the main character, Carly Shay, played by actress Miranda Cosgrove.
Despite the show being a worldwide success, McCurdy reveals that he suffered behind the scenes. His mother, Debra, controlled the meals — which have been described as “low-calorie pieces of bologna” and “lettuce with sauce” — and the girl’s baths.
The actress’s mother also did breast exams and vagina, claiming they would be inspections for cancer, and continually shaving her daughter’s legs. It was as if every aspect of the young teenager’s existence was controlled by her mother.
Because of the abuse he suffered and the “constant attention” he received as a celebrity, McCurdy says he faced obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), eating disorders and anxiety throughout your life.
The mother-daughter relationship worsened as McCurdy aged and became more independent. There is an email sent by Debra on one of the pages of the book, in which she calls her daughter a “slut”, an “ugly monster” and, at the end, asks for money for a refrigerator.

iCarly set experiences
In the book, McCurdy details the shocking moments he lived in Nickelodeonlike being photographed in a bikini during a fitting.
She also claims she was encouraged to drink alcohol by the “Creator”, alias invented not to reveal the man’s name.
McCurdy’s mother would not have spoken out or prevented situations like those described. On the contrary, she would have said that “it was the price of success”.
After the end of iCarly, the actress turned down a offer of $300,000 dollars from Nickelodeon to never speak publicly about the experiences she had filming iCarly and “Sam & Cat,” the one-season series McCurdy did with singer Ariana Grande. A company representative declined to comment on the matter when New York Times.
“I did not know anything”
The “iCarly” star Miranda Cosgrovesaid to New York Times that she had no idea of the difficulties her friend was going through at the time.
“When you’re young, you’re so in your own head,” Cosgrove said. “You can’t imagine that the people around you are having a lot more trouble. You don’t expect things like that from the person in the room who’s making everyone laugh.”
