What would the adventures of Marty McFly and Dr. Emmett Brown from “Back to the future“, if the classic DeLorean DMC-12, that took them on journeys through time, were it an electric car?
At the time the movie was released, thinking of an electrified version might even have been science fiction, but these days, the DeLorean Motor Company has made it a reality by introducing the Alpha5, its first 100% electric vehicle — but not yet. time travel.
The design of the coupe is very reminiscent of another electric car, the Tesla Roadster, but it is quite different because of the classic doors that open vertically, as if they were wings.
The model will be able to go from 0 to 96 km/h in 2.99 seconds and its top speed is 250 km/h. The Alpha 5 will be produced in Italy, with its power unit coming from England. At first, the model will be produced in 88 units, in reference to the speed of 88 miles that the DMC-12 needed to reach to travel in time.
The Alpha5 will be unveiled on August 18 in Pebble Beach, California, three days before the start of Monterey Car Week. The coupe is expected to go on sale in 2024.
And, despite the Alpha5 being based on the classic DeLorean, the current manufacturer is just the owner of the brand, which went bankrupt in the 1980s.
In fact, the DMC-12 was one of the main reasons for the company’s demise. Despite the iconic look, the car had some manufacturing problems and was more expensive than other vehicles in the same category, which made the model not do very well in sales.
Added to this, there was the arrest of John DeLorean, CEO of the company, in 1982, for cocaine trafficking. So, with so many setbacks, not even the help of “Back to the Future” saved DeLorean from being left alone in the past.
