Covid pandemic is ‘removed from over’, says WHO

According to the organization’s director-general, however, the current situation is “very different from a year ago”, with important lessons already learned.

Director General of the World Health Organization (WHO), Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus reiterated today that the pandemic of Covid-19 “is far from over”. According to him, however, the current situation is “very different from a year ago”, with important lessons already learned. During a press conference, the official stressed the importance of vaccinating “the right groups first”, such as the elderly and health professionals.

Ghebreyesus said that some countries that have reached 70% vaccination coverage could still face pressure on their health systems, as these most vulnerable groups are not properly immunized. He also stressed that the warning “is not theoretical, this is real”, and recalled that deaths from covid-19 have increased in the last five weeks around the world. “Several countries report increasing trends in hospitalizations following waves of transmission driven by Ômicron subvariants,” he pointed out.
