
Brazil aid of R$ 600 approved in Electoral PEC does not buy a basic food basket

The situation is very different from April 2020, when Congress established the Emergency Aid of R$ 600, which paid a basket with a surplus of R$ 43.75
The increase in Brazil Aid from R$400 to R$600 approved on Thursday by the Senate It should not have the same effect on families as the Emergency Aid paid at the beginning of the pandemic. Despite being the same value, inflation in this period was high and the population’s purchasing power deteriorated.
Payment of Emergency Aid to deal with the effects of the pandemic began in April 2020 and was worth R$600. Corrected by the IPCA for the period, this ticket would currently reach R$719.40.
With the amount paid in April 2020, it was possible to buy a basic basket in the main capitals of the country and still reserve money for other needs. Currently, this is only possible in five of the capitals surveyed by the Inter-Union Department of Statistics and Economic Studies (Dieese).
According to the data, in April 2020 it was possible to buy a basic food basket with this money in all 17 capitals surveyed, which include Brasília, São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, Porto Alegre, Campo Grande, Fortaleza, Salvador, among others.
The most expensive food basket was in São Paulo, which reached R$ 556.25. The cheapest was in Aracaju, capital of Sergipe, where the basket cost R$ 401.37
In comparison with May of this year, the latest data made available by Dieese, the Auxílio Brasil of R$ 600 does not buy a basic food basket in most of the cities surveyed. The basket remains below this value only in Aracaju, João Pessoa, Natal, Recife and Salvador, and even so all above R$ 540.
In more expensive capitals, it is impossible to buy a basic food basket with the aid. In São Paulo, it costs R$777.93, in Florianópolis, R$772.07 and in Porto Alegre, R$768.76.
