Biden says US would defend Taiwan in case of invasion; China criticizes Washington

The spokeswoman said the US should “handle Taiwan-related issues prudently” and “not send any wrong signals”.

The government of China criticized this Monday, 19, the president of the United StatesJoe Biden, for saying that US forces would defend Taiwan, in case Beijing tried to invade the island. Biden said “yes” when asked on CBS whether US forces would defend Taiwan in the event of a Chinese invasion, in a statement aired on Sunday.

Without naming the US president, a Chinese foreign ministry spokeswoman said “the US statements” violated Washington’s commitment not to support formal independence for Taiwan, which China said would lead to war.

The White House said after the interview that US policy had not changed.

The spokeswoman said the US should “handle Taiwan-related issues prudently” and “not send any wrong signals” to the island’s independence supporters to “avoid further havoc in US-China relations.”
