When shopping, do you usually choose the big retailers or the small neighborhood markets? A survey by global venture capital manager Flourish Ventures showed that grocery stores are higher than many thought. According to data from the Digitando o Pequeno Varejo 2022 survey, 46% of Brazilian consumers go to grocery stores daily and 92% plan to maintain or increase their purchases at grocery stores.
THE Humanization of contact between entrepreneur and client is seen as a key part of the result. “The owner knows the customer by name and the establishment often has what the customer needs. It is impossible for large retailers to deliver this standard of customer service, with the same level of contact and intensity of relationship”, says Arjuna Costa, partner at Flourish Ventures, in a note.
The use of technology by small businesses was the theme of the study. And, according to the data, the digitization started during the pandemic should intensify: 35% of entrepreneurs intend to increase the use of digital tools to sell online, communicate or deliver in the next two years.
The survey also showed that 65% of retailers use messaging apps to communicate with suppliers or consumers and 38% use apps and websites to purchase new products and stock up. Concerns about data security, lack of familiarity and access limitations are some of the obstacles to a greater implementation of digital tools on a daily basis.
In addition to Brazil, Flourish Ventures analyzed the performance of grocery stores in other countries, such as Egypt, India and Indonesia. In total, 1,600 people were interviewed, being 800 shopkeepers and 800 consumers.
